Thursday 10/16/08 - 5:30pm
This hike starts off of Palisades/Shell Beach road on the northern most end of Shell beach. The trail starts off steep right out the gate and rolls up and down the whole way to the top with a constant view of the ocean as long as its not foggy. The distance to the top is a little over a mile, roughly at 730ft above sea level where you get a great view of Shell Beach, Pirates Cove, Avila and See Canyon. The panoramic view is well worth the effort. There are two options for the descend, one is to retrace your steps the way you came or take a steep descend down the face of the hill that comes out at the parking lot of Pirates Cove, from there you head south towards Shell Beach along a flat trail that is part paved and part dirt.
Directions to Trail head:
From SLO get on 101 south. Take the Avila Beach Dr. Exit. Turn left onto Avila Beach Drive, and then a quick right onto Palisades/Shell Beach Road road. Roughly a 1/4 mile up Palisades/Shell Beach road is the unmarked trail head. Park safely off the side of the road, but do not block the gate or you might get towed. Carpooling is recommended.
